Hagia Sofia was completed by order of Justinian in the year 537 and was known as The Great Church due to its size compared with other Christian churches. Then in 1453, Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror converted the cathedral into his imperial mosque. Whether seen as a religious symbol or a metaphor for the enduring and magnificent nature of life itself Hagia Sofia does not, in daylight or by moonlight, fail to impress.
Original oil on canvas with painted 2 inch deep sides.
